Director of Shelter Medicine

We are recruiting for a Director of Shelter Medicine for a no kill animal shelter organization in Chicago, IL.

The Director of Shelter Medicine position is a key role, responsible for ensuring the highest quality of care for the animals in our program. All animals that are treatable and rehabilitatable receive care, resulting in a need for medical oversight of a variety of infectious diseases, chronic medical cases and behavioral management.

Recently renovated and state-of-the-art medical equipment and facilities are available for care of Chicago’s homeless animals. The laboratory is fully equipped including in-house bloodwork machines and state-of-the-art digital radiography.

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Perform examinations, vaccinations and diagnostic tests, while ensuring the treatment plan is clearly outlined to move animals through to foster, surgery and/or adoption
  • Oversee chronic medical cases to decrease length of stay and promote adoption with research, creativity and outside resources in accordance with protocols and resources
  • Supervise shelter medicine veterinarians and provide mentorship for situations requiring immediate medical problem solving
  • Make recommendations and collaborate with all medical staff in the formulation of shelter medicine objectives, practices, plans and decisions that influence operations to ensure optimal health of sheltered animals through research and up-to-date standards of care
  • Oversee chronic behavioral cases including ensuring excellent quality of life and appropriate pharmacotherapy using board-certified veterinary behaviorists as a resource
  • Provide support and leadership for development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and protocols
  • Communicate effectively with staff and other departments through daily contact, meetings, verbal or in writing, as needed to coordinate and direct medical functions of the shelter
  • Assist with the maintenance of shelter drug and supply inventory while meeting and maintaining DEA requirements
  • Participate in interviewing and hiring decisions for medical staff
  • Advise, perform or oversee euthanasia in accordance with practices
  • Take immediate action to address any safety concern or noncompliance of safety rules that could put an employee, volunteer, client, animal, or the organization at risk
  • Support a collaborative, professional, and positive work environment
  • Adhere to federal and state regulations and organizational protocols regarding animal care, treatment, advocacy, and the mission of Chicago
  • Performs duties in a manner which encourages attainment of goals, contributions, and business for and its programs
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Requirements:

 

  • Must be a licensed Veterinarian in the State of Illinois
  • At least five years of experience in Shelter Medicine
  • Ability to obtain controlled substance licensure preferred
  • Management and/or leadership experience ideal
  • Must be able to work standing or sitting for 8 or more hours
  • Ability to multi-task while working in a high-volume, fast-paced environment while maintaining a high standard of care
  • Available for holiday coverage, weekends or flexible schedule as needed
