Spay/Neuter Veterinary Surgeon

We are recruiting for a Veterinary Surgeon for a Spay/Neuter clinic in Chicago.

The surgeon is responsible for care of all surgical patients, ensuring all clinic staff members are adhering to proper pre-, peri- and post-operative care of patients.

This position has a nearly exclusive focus on high quality high volume spay/neuter surgeries and occasional other soft tissue surgery. Typical surgery case mix includes dental extractions, mass removals, amputations, wound repairs and optic surgeries, and possible occasional emergency surgeries.  The potential exists for additional interdepartmental work in the Shelter Medicine program.

 

Responsibilities

  • Perform surgical and medical (i.e., ultrasounds) care for shelter animals based on need and capabilities. Surgical procedures are primarily spay/neuter, but may include dental extractions, mass removals, amputations, wound repairs and optic surgeries and emergency surgeries.
  • Manage anesthetic and surgical complications, report all complications for surgeries completed to clinic management, and support a culture of continuous improvement
  • Make reasonable medical decisions based on available resources
  • Follow and support all organizational and medical protocols, recommending updates, innovations and improvements to management as relevant.
  • Communicate, consult and collaborate with Shelter Medicine veterinarians and technicians, as well as Clinic colleagues
  • Be a leader among staff, displaying a positive attitude and acting as a motivating force for all staff members

 

Requirements

  • Must be a licensed Veterinarian in the state of Illinois.
  • At least one year spay/neuter surgery experience
  • Able to perform cryptorchid neuters and difficult spay surgeries such as pyometra, dystocia, in heat, obese and large patients.
  • Mobile surgical (spay/neuter or other) experience not required, but preferred.
  • Demonstrated passion and prior experience working with homeless animals and/or underserved communities preferred.
  • Must be able to work standing or sitting for 8 or more hours.
